Inverclyde Planners Recommend Approval Of Greenock Drive-Thru

Inverclyde Planners are recommending that approval be given for a £1.5 million drive-thru coffee shop on land beside the A8 route into Greenock town centre

The development, which would also have an indoor seating area for up to 40 customers, is proposed for a site at Arthur Street, close to the EE and Webhelp contact centres.

Councillors on Inverclyde Planning Board are due to consider the application on Wednesday.

A report by officials urges that permission be given and states: “The site is listed on the vacant and derelict land register and has been vacant for an extended period of years with no previous submitted planning applications for development proposals.

“The applicant confirms that since the purchase of the site at auction, a renewed marketing campaign has been undertaken. The marketing report advises that there has been no development interest for industrial or business class uses.

“It subsequently goes on to advise that five different property consultants, all acting on behalf of different national drive-thru operators, confirmed they were keen to bring their client’s brand, product and associated jobs to Greenock.”

The report continues: “Whilst without a specified operator it is difficult to put an exact figure on the likely number of full-time equivalent jobs created, there is no dispute that such a development will bring employment, contribute positively to the local economy and support the recovery from the challenges of the covid-19 pandemic.”

No objections have been made by members of the public.

The application was submitted by Dalglen Investments, owned by local businessmen Sandy and James Easdale, who purchased the half-acre site from Scottish Enterprise in 2018. The land is now being marketed for sale by Bowman Rebecchi.
