Green Light For House Proposal At Landmark Former Gourock Church

Plans to convert a historic Inverclyde church building into a house have been given the go-ahead.

The former St Bartholomew’s Church, which sits on the hillside at Barrhill Road overlooking the Clyde at Gourock, was sold by the Scottish Episcopal Church last year through Bowman Rebecchi.

Inverclyde Council planners have now approved proposals drawn up by Rebecchi Architectural to convert the building into a house.

There will be a new mezzanine level, a glazed extension, a raised terrace, and off-street parking.

Drawings show dining and lounge areas, a bedroom, a sitting room, two further sitting rooms/guest rooms and an office.

The B-Listed building closed in July 2021 after 160 years of operation when the small congregation took the difficult decision to disband.

Designed originally by J C Sharp of Gourock 1867 and extended by H D Walton around 1895, the church’s feature, including a chancel extension enhanced by a beautiful window depicting the Ascension designed by George Walton.
